Wise man Melchior

The wise man Melchior is the white king and brings gold to the child king, to symbolize "the king". It also symbolizes old age and the European continent.

He must be accompanied in the crib of the king mage Balthazar and king mage Gaspard. The Three Kings are guided by the Shepherd's Star to find the stable where the baby Jesus was born.

The three wise men

The three wise men (Balthazar, Melchoir and Gaspard) must first be set back and then be moved forward each day to arrive in front of the baby Jesus on January 6, the day of the epiphany.

According to the Gospel according to Matthew 2.1-2, "Magi from the East came to Jerusalem ...". At the time, they were not kings but magi, priests or scholars from Persia.

Their number represents the holy trinity (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit), the 3 continents known at the time (Europe for Melchior, Asia for Gaspard and Africa for Balthazar) as well as the three ages of life (youth, middle age and old age).

The gifts they bring to the baby Jesus are also symbolic (myrrh, a plant used for embalming, represents man; gold represents kings; incense represents God and divinity).

Choose quality santons

To choose quality santons, you must take into account several criteria. They must of course be made in an artisanal way in terracotta and painted by hand… but that is not enough!

You must also pay particular attention to the finesse of the details (this is the signature and the know-how of a "great" santonnier). In particular, the face, the drape and the shapes of the santon attest to the quality of the mold. Likewise, the realism and expression of the face gives you guarantees on the painter's mastery.

A renowned santonnier must therefore be recognized as an "artisan of Art" ... And, as a guarantee of quality, our santonnier has also received the gold medal for the best worker in France twice!
